A new proposal from LIPA

LIPA stands for Long Island Power Authority.

A new proposal to move electric rates with reward for off-peak power usage has been announced in Long Island.

In simple terms, customers' electric bill will be higher between 3pm and 7pm but less for the rest of the time including weekends and holidays. From 10pm to 6am, discounts will be applied under super-off peak hours.

The plan, if approved by LIPA on March 29, 2023 is part to help the environment and save money for Long Islanders. After approval, the program will start in February 2024 with the option to keep the same current plan without changing.

Another plan is to issue a refund if paid less on a flat rate in the first year. Again, the overall purpose of this plan is for electric vehicles charging overnight as more and more people are replacing gas powered motors to manage the grid.

LIPA announced the date for public hearings, February 21 at the main office. This is open to the public.
